Every Dope or Nope test follows the same six steps: take the ampoule, break it, add your sample, twist the top, put the top back on the ampoule and compare the colour with the chart. The whole routine takes a few minutes. Two kits add one step: the cocaine purity test uses an extra buffer, and the THC test uses a small pellet.
Prepare before you open the pack
- Read the leaflet first and keep the colour chart in reach.
- Work on a clean, dry and stable surface in good daylight or neutral white light. Coloured party lights make a colour impossible to judge.
- Use only a tiny bit of your sample, about the size of a pinhead. With a pill, scrape a little off the edge. More material does not give a better reading.
- Keep children and pets away. The ampoule contains a strong acid.
The six steps

How to use Dope or Nope
Use only a tiny bit of your sample, about the size of a pinhead.
- Take the ampoule
- Break the ampoule
- Add your sample
- Twist the top
- Put the top back on the ampoule
- Compare the colour
1. Take the ampoule. It holds the test reagent. Keep it upright.
2. Break the ampoule. Break off the top, pointing it away from your face. Keep the top: you need it again.
3. Add your sample. Drop your pinhead of material into the ampoule.
4. Twist the top. Twist the top you just removed so it fits as a cap.
5. Put the top back on the ampoule. Close it and keep it upright.
6. Compare the colour. Watch the liquid and compare the colour, and how fast it appears, with the chart in the pack.
Purity kits: the extra buffer step
The cocaine purity test comes with a separate buffer. You add it right after breaking the ampoule and before your sample. The rest of the routine stays the same.

The THC test: the pellet step
The THC test starts with a small pellet. Remove it first, break the ampoule, put the pellet inside, and only then add your sample.

Common mistakes
- Too much sample. A large lump can darken the liquid and hide the real colour. Stick to a pinhead.
- Judging the colour under club lights or a coloured lamp. Read the result in daylight or plain white light, with the chart right next to the ampoule.
- Reusing a test. Every ampoule is for one sample only. A second sample in the same liquid gives a mixed, unreadable result.
- Testing a pill on its stamp side only. Scrape a little from the edge; the rest of the pill stays intact for a second test if you want one.
- Ignoring a strange result. No reaction or an unexpected colour is a result too. It means the sample is not what you expected.
After the test
Close the ampoule with its top and throw it away out of reach of children. If liquid touches your skin or eyes, rinse with plenty of water. Store unused packs cool and dark, below 35 °C (95 °F), in their original packaging.
Then read what your colour means, and what it does not, on the page about reading results. Each test page also has its own colour section; start from the test finder if you are unsure which kit you need.
